Meet Team Camp Casco - Mike DeMeola
Get to know the three amazing individuals running for Camp Casco in the 128th Boston Marathon®. We invite you to learn their stories and why they are raising money for Camp Casco.
I am originally from New Jersey and currently live in Ocala, FL, with my wife Karen. We have two adult children, a one-year-old chocolate lab named Charlie, and we own a local CPA firm. Karen and I like outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and running, and we love spending time in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Georgia. I am also an avid sports fan (Yankees and Eagles, sorry!)
I started running a few years ago to get healthy. My wife has been running for a while, so we do it together. I love the challenge that running presents and the feeling once I finish. My goal was to run a 5k, and now I want to see if I can complete all the major marathons and earn my 6-star medal.
The 128th Boston Marathon® will be my first Boston Marathon and my third marathon overall. I ran Chicago in 2019 and New York in 2022. I am excited to run the Boston Marathon® because it is the gold standard. I can’t wait to experience the energy in the city and the challenge of running up Heartbreak Hill.
When I looked for a charity to run with for the marathon, I searched for one that helps children overcome adversity. My wife and I found Camp Casco, which quickly became our first choice.
My daughter was diagnosed with neuroblastoma when she was six months old. She attended a camp similar to Camp Casco as a child, and when she was too old to be a camper, she volunteered and even became a paid staff member. She continues to volunteer and has even traveled to other camps throughout the country. She remains close friends with those she met over the years. I saw how camp changed her life and believe it contributed to the woman she is today. Running for Camp Casco allows me to continue her mission to help children in need, especially those affected by cancer.
For anyone who wants to be a Boston Marathon® charity runner, first, find a charity you have a connection with and tell your story. People are more inclined to open their wallets when you are passionate about the organization. Second, do not be afraid or shy about asking for a donation. You lose every dollar you do not ask for, so ask everyone. Third, start early! Fundraising takes time. You may have to remind people a few times before they contribute.
