Ask A Camp Parent: Lisa Grant AMA

Thank you to everyone who submitted questions for our first camp parent AMA! And thank you, Lisa Grant, for sharing your and Beckett’s experiences with Camp Casco.

Lisa Grant

What changes did you see in your child after returning from camp?

Thanks to camp, my son is more independent, confident, and adventurous. In fact, he has attended several other sleepaway camps since his first year at Camp Casco and has traveled overseas with his school during the past three years.

Do you continue to see changes as he returns year after year?

Yes. Maybe smaller changes each year, but changes nonetheless. As he has matured at camp, he is even beginning to think about becoming a Camp Casco counselor!

Is there anything that he's done at camp that has surprised you?

My son can be a bit of an introvert and doesn’t enjoy being the center of attention. I was pleasantly surprised that he participated in the talent show and appeared on stage!

Have you needed to contact staff while your child is at camp? How easy was it to speak with them?

I have only needed to speak with staff once. It was a quick and easy process.

What was your biggest concern about sending him away to camp for the first time? Did that concern ease as the week went on or at the end of the week?

To be perfectly honest, after speaking to Camp Casco staff, receiving pre-camp communications, and meeting the counselors, I didn’t have any major concerns.

Did your child get homesick?

My son did not become homesick. Quite the opposite - he wished the camp was for two weeks!

What happens if a camper gets homesick?

Many of the Camp Casco counselors have worked at the camp for multiple years. They are very comfortable anticipating any issues the campers might experience. Each day is filled with fun and exciting activities. The campers are busy and well-supervised. If a camper is feeling homesick, one or more counselors with work with the camper to make them feel more comfortable and less homesick.

What has your experience been like while your son is away from camp for the week?

Knowing that our son is in excellent hands, my husband and I enjoy our time while he is away at camp. It’s a wonderful time for us to recharge and reconnect!

How often did you get updates about your child?

The camp app is updated on a daily basis. Although the narrative is about the camp as a whole, there are tons of photos of the campers. The vibe is always positive and the campers look joyous and happy!

If you have any other questions about sending your child to camp, email our team at hello@campcasco.org.
